Italy is rolling out Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) rules that directly affect sellers on Amazon.it across seven product categories. Sellers who don't register and submit their EPR Registration Numbers before upcoming deadlines risk automatic enrollment in Amazon's managed compliance service — complete with additional fees — or potential listing restrictions. Here's what you need to know to stay ahead of these requirements.

What Products Fall Under the New Rules

The Italian EPR framework covers seven product categories: electrical and electronic equipment (EEE), batteries, packaging materials, polyethylene products, tyres, oils, and mineral oils. These categories cast a wide net — even products that simply contain batteries or ship in regulated packaging may trigger obligations.

Sellers should audit their entire Amazon.it catalog carefully. The regulations apply to anyone selling or producing covered goods on the Italian marketplace, regardless of where the seller is physically based. If you sell cross-border into Italy, you are not exempt.

Critical Deadlines to Track

• December 31, 2025 — EPR Registration Number required for WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) covering 2025 annual sales
• June 30, 2026 — ERN required for batteries, polyethylene, oils, packaging, and tyres covering quarterly sales
• Automatic enrollment — Miss the deadline and Amazon enrolls you in its managed EPR Compliance service by default
• Micro-enterprise exemption — Packaging requirements do not apply to businesses classified as micro-enterprises

These deadlines are firm. Obtaining an ERN from an authorised compliance organisation can take weeks, so sellers should begin the registration process well in advance.

Amazon's Managed Compliance Service

Sellers who don't submit their own ERN by the relevant deadline will be automatically enrolled in Amazon's EPR Compliance on Amazon service. Under this program, Amazon calculates eco-contribution fees based on your sales data, pays them on your behalf, and then debits the amounts from your seller account — along with an annual service fee for each enrolled category.
