This granular control helps sellers balance fast delivery promises with realistic processing windows for products that need extra preparation, ultimately protecting account health while keeping customers happy.

What Is Handling Time and Why Does It Matter?

Every offer listed on Amazon comes with a customer delivery promise — the estimated date a buyer can expect their order to arrive. Handling time is the portion of that promise that covers the period between when an order is placed and when the seller ships it and confirms the shipment in Seller Central. For Fulfilled by Merchant (FBM) sellers, this metric directly impacts both listing competitiveness and account health.

When a seller sets a shorter default handling time, such as one business day, their listings can appear more attractive to customers who prioritize fast delivery. However, if the seller cannot consistently meet that one-day window for every product in their catalog, late shipments will accumulate. Late shipments negatively affect the Late Shipment Rate metric, which is one of the key performance indicators Amazon monitors for account health. Repeated violations can lead to account warnings, restrictions, or even suspension.

ASIN-specific handling times solve this tension by letting sellers maintain an aggressive default handling time for most products while carving out exceptions for items that genuinely need more processing time.

How ASIN-Specific Handling Times Work

ASIN-specific handling times function as overrides to your default handling time. If your account-level default is set to one business day, any ASIN without a specific override will inherit that one-day window. When you assign a specific handling time to an individual ASIN — say, two business days — that product's delivery promise adjusts accordingly, giving you an extra day to pick, prep, pack, and ship that particular item before confirming the shipment.

This is especially useful for products that require special preparation. Fragile items that need custom packaging, bundles that must be assembled before shipping, personalized or made-to-order products, and heavy or oversized goods that require special carrier arrangements are all strong candidates for extended handling times. Rather than inflating your default handling time across the board to accommodate these outliers, you can keep most of your catalog on an aggressive one-day timeline and selectively extend only the ASINs that need it.
