With a smaller footprint than cars or vans, they can operate in dedicated bike lanes, helping reduce traffic congestion and noise. The e-cargo bikes have four wheels and a secure rear cargo hold, along with covered seating, a windshield, and windshield wipers, providing weather protection for DSP delivery associates.

$1.3 billion investment in affordable housingOur commitment extends far beyond job creation. A building reimaginedWhen this project was first conceived, it was planned as a mixed-affordability development. Amazon's investment changed that. Today, every one of the 377 homes will be affordable—235 of them two- and three-bedroom units for families—with half available to renters earning 50% to 60% of area median income and half to those earning 80% of area median income. Amazon's participation also extended the affordability commitment from 40 years to 99 years. Cloud Connect brings university talent to HQ2 for hands-on learning and mentorshipOn November 14, Amazon's Black Employee Network (BEN Tech) partnered with Amazon University Talent Acquisition and Field North America Tech Customer Service teams to welcome more than 120 university students to HQ2 for Cloud Connect. The event gave students an inside look at Amazon while helping them connect their academic interests to real career paths.Students attended from across the region, representing more than 10 colleges and universities including Howard University, University of Maryland, University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, George Mason University, Morgan State, and Carnegie Mellon. The first no-cost community space for STEM programming in the area, the makerspace was created in response to the needs and input of the community.The new space expands STEM programming and hands-on learning opportunities, enables Aspire to support additional students in its programs, and provides a central meeting place for Aspire staff, students, and families.Amazon provided the initial funding for the project to enable Aspire to expand its facility and add the makerspace. With the new space, Aspire is incorporating science labs, coding classes, video and design projects, robotics demonstrations, structured play, and other interactive activities into its programming.Aspire served a record number of students during its 2024-2025 programs, with an average of 72% improving their math levels over the past two years. Volunteers assembled 1,000 hygiene kits, packed more than 500 books with personal notes to share with local schools, and created more than 600 cards for hospitalized children. "Representation through service means creating spaces where our communities can see, hear, and feel that they matter. Giving back locally is how we carry that forward, and the Tech Day of Service reflects the legacy we are building, one grounded in visibility, voice, and lasting impact," said Tyson J. Opening doors to the next generation of builders at HQ2In 2024 a small idea took root: How can Amazon open our doors to inspire the next generation of builders? That vision came to life when iD Tech, in partnership with ProServe, AWS Security and the Inclusive eXperiences and Technology team, launched the inaugural HQ2 Summer Camp, welcoming Amazon employees and local youth into a world of hands-on STEM learning.The two-week program offered a timely solution for Amazon builders balancing work and family schedules during the summer. HQ2 transformed into a buzzing hub of creativity where students aged 7–17 explored game design, artificial intelligence, Python programming, and robotics. Campers also toured our HQ2 offices, joined leadership for career chats, and expressed their creativity through Amazon’s “Expression Lab” projects. Mornings focused on coding, robotics development, and game design. Afternoons brought team-building games, social activities, and robotics competitions.What made the camp unique was the direct access to Amazon tech leaders who shared real-world insights, showing how harnessing curiosity can inspire innovation with world changing impact. Recently, that spirit hit a high note as HQBlue, an eight-member jazz band made up entirely of Amazon HQ2 employees, delivered a soulful lunchtime performance at Met Park featuring classics like "Fly Me to the Moon" and "Autumn Leaves." What began as casual jam sessions among coworkers quickly grew into something more. The group, made up of engineers and legal professionals, rehearsed during lunch breaks and after hours, building harmony across teams and titles. Growing for good: Urban agriculture at Arlington HouseJust minutes from HQ2's offices, a quiet act of service is taking root. Each month from spring through fall, Warriors@Amazon volunteers and partners with the Capital Region Sustainability chapter to tend the kitchen garden at Arlington House, part of Arlington National Cemetery. In collaboration with the National Park Service and Plot Against Hunger, the produce harvested here is donated to local food banks, supporting neighbors across Northern Virginia.This project blends history, sustainability, and community service. We contributed $78 million last year in support of more than 90 community partners dedicated to making the National Capital Region a better place to live. Through initiatives large and small, our partners’ work has an indelible impact—providing essential social services to those who need them most, ensuring young people have access to learning opportunities, revitalizing our parks and green spaces, and continuing beloved area traditions like the National Cherry Blossom Festival and the Arlington County Fair.
Since launching the Amazon Housing Equity Fund in 2021, we have committed over $1.2 billion to help create or preserve affordable housing for more than 20,700 low- to moderate-income individuals so they can live in the communities they serve and love. This is especially important for first responders, teachers, nurses, and service industry employees who are getting priced out of expensive metro areas like ours.
We’ve donated more than $2.7 million since 2021 to local organizations tackling food insecurity and hunger across the National Capital Region. Our support recently helped the Capital Area Food Bank build its new warehouse in Lorton, Virginia, enabling the distribution of 13 million meals annually to Northern Virginia residents experiencing food insecurity.
We continue to invest in programs to help children in grades K-12, higher-education students, and adult learners unlock their potential. By focusing on critical digital skills, we prepare these individuals for the jobs of the future. Through Amazon Future Engineer— our childhood-to-career computer science program—we delivered 74,000 student hours of STEM education, literacy, and career exploration courses across the National Capital Region. And over 55,000 learners have accessed free training and education at the AWS Skills Center in Arlington.These are just a few of the ways that we are giving back to the region that’s become our second home. HQ2 prepares to welcome Arlington Community High School to Metropolitan Park in 2026As part of our commitment to providing a home for Arlington Community High School (ACHS) by 2026, we are finalizing plans to welcome more than 250 ACHS students, faculty, and staff to HQ2’s Metropolitan Park in time for the 2026-2027 school year. Since we selected Arlington as the home of our second headquarters in 2018, we have worked closely with the county and School Board to address one of the community’s most pressing issues—finding a location for ACHS which has never had a permanent home.“We look forward to this bright and exciting new chapter for Arlington Community High School and our students and staff. Explore the Met Park Butterfly Garden at Amazon’s HQ2Met Park is home to many things—over a dozen women- and minority-owned small businesses, works of art that honor the National Capital Region, world-leading sustainable buildings, and more. Now it’s home to butterflies, too.Met Park’s Butterfly Garden opened on June 20 to a crowd of Amazon employees and their families, children from the Celebree School of National Landing, and members of the community, who all showed up to see these little natural wonders. The Butterfly Garden is a deeply precious community attraction that sits at the crossing point of two of Amazon’s priorities: being a leader in sustainability and being a good neighbor to the Arlington community.“Our 2.5-acre public park is home to a diverse range of native plants that both beautify the surrounding area and nourish the soil in which they are planted,” said Lead Horticulturist Dillan Clark. “Once we realized that our park grounds already included many of the attributes and native plants that are needed to foster a home for butterflies, we partnered with the North American Butterfly Association to explore an expansion of Amazon’s horticultural attractions and bring the butterfly garden to life.”

Met Park was planned with native and adaptive plantings that are conducive to the Arlington climate—the soil is engineered to retain water and promote root growth while smart and low-flow irrigation systems are optimized to reduce water consumption by providing only what the native plants need. The garden currently includes ten Painted Lady butterflies that are currently in their chrysalises metamorphosing from caterpillar into butterfly—but they’ll be spreading their wings soon.Amazon’s second headquarters was built with sustainability at its core, including two acres (or nearly 100,000 square feet) of green roofs with native plantings where visitors and employees alike can find respite and connect to nature. We worked with more than 100 nonprofits in and around Arlington, Virginia, which is home to Amazon’s second headquarters (HQ2). Our support went to organizations like Bridges to Independence, which is working to break intergenerational cycles of poverty; the English Empowerment Center, which serves nearly 1,500 beginning-level English language and literacy adult learners; and Aspire, which helps historically underserved young people fulfill their potential through afterschool and summer learning programs that support and connect families, schools, and communities.
Amazon was named the top philanthropic company in the Washington, D.C., metro area by the Washington Business Journal. Since 2018, Amazon has invested more than $161 million in local nonprofits, community groups, organizations, businesses, and public schools.
Amazon launched a new housing pilot initiative that will help nearly 1,000 individuals and families from underserved communities become homeowners in Virginia and Washington, D.C., as well as Washington state and Tennessee. This is part of a broader set of initiatives from the Amazon Housing Equity Fund. Since 2021, Amazon has committed over $1 billion in loans and grants to create or preserve more than 7,500 affordable housing units in and around the National Capital Region.
Amazon continued to advance its commitment to equity in education through several partnerships and funding efforts, including Amazon Future Engineer, a comprehensive childhood-to-career program aimed at increasing access to computer science education for students from underserved and underrepresented communities. At the Agentic Arcade, built using AWS, kids answered questions that helped AI create a custom video game—then got to play it. At the Badge in a Box station, they designed their own AI-powered stickers.Kids also packed their own Amazon packages at the Pick & Pack station, used real stethoscopes at the Doctor for a Day booth with One Medical, learned about recycling through a game called Trashketball, and cleaned up a miniature ocean at the Ocean Cleanup station—learning about Amazon's sustainability initiatives along the way. A professional LEGO artist built a large-scale mural of Rufus, Amazon’s AI shopping assistant, Amazon's mascot, throughout the day."Learn and Be Curious" is one of Amazon's Leadership Principles—and this expo brought it to life for the youngest members of the Amazon family. Whether they were free-building with LEGOs alongside a professional artist constructing a mural of Rufus, or learning about Amazon's ocean cleanup initiatives, kids left with more than just swag. They left with a glimpse of what's possible.The event took place June 26 at Amazon’s HQ2 campus in Arlington, Virginia, with a similar experience taking place at HQ1 in Seattle on July 24-25.

Virginia has served as a thriving hub for innovation and logistics hub for Amazon—home to a vast operations and transportation network, and AI and cloud infrastructure that supports critical needs across the state.When Logan Cunningham completed her first Olympic-distance triathlon race at 13 years old, she never imagined she’d one day lead a 250-person corporate team through the streets of Arlington. But that’s exactly what happened this year at the Amazon Armed Forces Cycling Classic, the Capital region’s premier cycling event and one of the largest races in the D.C. area.Amazon has served as the title sponsor since 2025. This year marked a milestone: a new partnership with Amaury Sport Organisation (A.S.O.), the company behind the Tour de France, elevating the event from a regional tradition to one with international recognition.The weekend kicked off Saturday with the Challenge Ride, open to cycling enthusiasts of all ages and abilities who participated on behalf of a corporate team, an armed forces branch, or as individuals. How does the e-cargo bike pilot work?Through the new pilot program, Delivery Service Partners (DSPs) will deliver Amazon packages to customers across the District using a fleet of up to 15 battery-powered e-cargo bikes that move quickly, safely, and quietly through busy city streets.E-cargo bikes are a natural fit for urban deliveries. With a smaller footprint than cars or vans, they can operate in dedicated bike lanes, helping reduce traffic congestion and noise. The e-cargo bikes have four wheels and a secure rear cargo hold, along with covered seating, a windshield, and windshield wipers, providing weather protection for DSP delivery associates.
Why is Amazon testing e-cargo bikes in D.C.?"We've seen the benefits e-cargo bikes bring to urban deliveries around the world, and we're excited to launch this pilot alongside DDOT to help ensure we get it right here in D.C.," said Dave Alperson, vice president of North America last mile transportation at Amazon. Met Park brings jobs, small businesses, and community programmingSince opening Met Park in May 2023, nearly 8,500 Amazon employees now work at our second headquarters. The campus includes 50,000 square feet of retail space for 13 local small businesses and a 2.5-acre public park that has hosted hundreds of community events—from affordable housing summits to farmers markets, live music, and art programming with MoCA Arlington’s Innovation Studio—reaching an estimated 133,000 community members. Since implementing our 5-day return-to-office policy in January 2025, we've continued to see positive economic impacts in the National Landing community, including foot traffic averaged more than 155,000 monthly visitors at Met Park.
$1.3 billion investment in affordable housingOur commitment extends far beyond job creation. Through Amazon’s housing fund, we’ve invested $1.3 billion to preserve and create over 10,000 affordable housing units across the National Capital Region. In February, we broke ground on the Victory Center in Alexandria—transforming a long-vacant office building into 377 all-affordable homes. We’ve also donated more than $60 million to 230+ local community partners in the last 12 months.
Building Virginia's talent pipelineWe’re building Virginia’s talent pipeline from the ground up, investing more than $5.7 million in CodeVA to expand computer science education and awarding $920,000 in Amazon Future Engineer Scholarships to Virginia students. Over 5,000 Amazon operations employees in Virginia have participated in Career Choice, our pre-paid tuition program.Virginia is a great state to do business. A building reimaginedWhen this project was first conceived, it was planned as a mixed-affordability development. Amazon's investment changed that. Today, every one of the 377 homes will be affordable—235 of them two- and three-bedroom units for families—with half available to renters earning 50% to 60% of area median income and half to those earning 80% of area median income. Amazon's participation also extended the affordability commitment from 40 years to 99 years. "This project represents something bigger than just one building," said Steve Hartell, vice president of public policy at Amazon. "It will help chart a course for a new future—not only for the generations of residents who will call this place home, but for the broader Eisenhower West redevelopment as well."
Built for Alexandria's essential workersWith 235 family-sized units and easy Metro access, 5001 Eisenhower Avenue is designed for Alexandria's essential workers and families who want to stay in the neighborhoods they love. Part of a larger commitmentToday's groundbreaking is part of Amazon's commitment of more than $1.3 billion to create and preserve over 10,000 affordable homes in the National Capital Region. In Alexandria, Amazon has committed over $166 million to support more than 1,400 affordable homes—part of our $3.6 billion Housing Fund spanning the Puget Sound region, National Capital Region, and Nashville.Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) students showcased innovative AI solutions this week as part of the Seize the Moment Student AI Innovation Challenge, a program supported by Amazon through its work with Playlab.Top student teams from 25 FCPS high schools demonstrated custom AI apps at Herndon High School, just miles from Amazon's HQ2 in Arlington, Virginia. Soft lighting, natural wood textures, and layered soundscapes create a moment of quiet in the heart of HQ2. Horizon adds to Amazon's commitment to supporting public art and cultural programming that builds community at Met Park.On December 6, the National Landing BID, in partnership with Amazon, brings The Lodge to Met Park with a full lineup of seasonal activities that also spotlight local businesses and artists. Neighbors, families, and four-legged friends can enjoy gingerbread chalet building inside the MoCA Arlington Innovation Studio, along with selfies with Santa, face painting, letters to Santa, ornament making, and Ski Vacation Bingo under covered tents on the Central Green. Visitors can also take part in the Peppermint Mocha Latte Competition which features local coffee shops—including Good Company Coffee, one of several small businesses supported through HQ2's engagement and vendor partnership efforts.These collaborations with the BID and our neighborhood retailers help activate Met Park, create economic opportunities, and reinforce HQ2 as a welcoming, community-centered destination.On November 14, Amazon's Black Employee Network (BEN Tech) partnered with Amazon University Talent Acquisition and Field North America Tech Customer Service teams to welcome more than 120 university students to HQ2 for Cloud Connect. The event gave students an inside look at Amazon while helping them connect their academic interests to real career paths.Students attended from across the region, representing more than 10 colleges and universities including Howard University, University of Maryland, University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, George Mason University, Morgan State, and Carnegie Mellon. Their studies covered more than 15 majors such as computer science, cybersecurity, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and business. Student organizations were also represented, including the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), Society of Women Engineers (SWE), ColorStack, and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE).The day began with a panel featuring senior leaders who shared the turns their careers have taken and the impact their teams have on the technology that powers Amazon. Their stories opened the door for meaningful conversations and set the tone for the hands-on learning ahead.Following the senior leader panel, students joined a careers in tech conversation and a recruiting workshop before heading into the PartyRock workshop. There, they built generative AI applications in teams and presented them in a Shark Tank style pitch session. The room quickly shifted into a creative space filled with notes, sketches, and teammates working together to bring their concepts to life.To keep that momentum going, each student left paired with a mentor who will support them as they navigate school, internships, and early career decisions. For many attendees, the building represents more than new construction—it's a chance for families to stay in a region where housing costs have pushed many out."We created our housing fund for projects just like this," said Senthil Sankaran, managing principal of Amazon's housing fund. The first no-cost community space for STEM programming in the area, the makerspace was created in response to the needs and input of the community.The new space expands STEM programming and hands-on learning opportunities, enables Aspire to support additional students in its programs, and provides a central meeting place for Aspire staff, students, and families.Amazon provided the initial funding for the project to enable Aspire to expand its facility and add the makerspace. With the new space, Aspire is incorporating science labs, coding classes, video and design projects, robotics demonstrations, structured play, and other interactive activities into its programming.Aspire served a record number of students during its 2024-2025 programs, with an average of 72% improving their math levels over the past two years. The event united more than 200 HQ2 volunteers for a day of service and impact. Volunteers assembled 1,000 hygiene kits, packed more than 500 books with personal notes to share with local schools, and created more than 600 cards for hospitalized children. "Representation through service means creating spaces where our communities can see, hear, and feel that they matter. Giving back locally is how we carry that forward, and the Tech Day of Service reflects the legacy we are building, one grounded in visibility, voice, and lasting impact," said Tyson J. Thompkins, director community engagement of BEN-DMV. BEN-DMV's impact goes far beyond one event. From cultural celebrations to neighborhood cleanups, the group builds programs that reflect HQ2's vision: a hub of innovation and inclusion that strengthens community. At Community Day, more than 1,000 neighbors of all ages gathered in Met Park to enjoy a variety of activities. This included a “Taste of Met Park” that highlighted the small businesses and restaurants that call Met Park home. Other activities included a community library, law games, a Lego wall, face painting, and more. With over 50 local vendors, Met Park's Saturday Market offered produce, hot food and handcrafted art. A photo booth with themed props and a live DJ kept the energy lively throughout the day.We are proud to welcome 21 high school students from Arlington County and D.C. to Amazon’s JumpStart Youth Apprenticeship Program in partnership with CityWorks DC, an affiliate of CareerWiseUSA. We contributed $78 million last year in support of more than 90 community partners dedicated to making the National Capital Region a better place to live. Through initiatives large and small, our partners’ work has an indelible impact—providing essential social services to those who need them most, ensuring young people have access to learning opportunities, revitalizing our parks and green spaces, and continuing beloved area traditions like the National Cherry Blossom Festival and the Arlington County Fair.
Since launching the Amazon Housing Equity Fund in 2021, we have committed over $1.2 billion to help create or preserve affordable housing for more than 20,700 low- to moderate-income individuals so they can live in the communities they serve and love. This is especially important for first responders, teachers, nurses, and service industry employees who are getting priced out of expensive metro areas like ours.
We’ve donated more than $2.7 million since 2021 to local organizations tackling food insecurity and hunger across the National Capital Region. Our support recently helped the Capital Area Food Bank build its new warehouse in Lorton, Virginia, enabling the distribution of 13 million meals annually to Northern Virginia residents experiencing food insecurity.
We continue to invest in programs to help children in grades K-12, higher-education students, and adult learners unlock their potential. By focusing on critical digital skills, we prepare these individuals for the jobs of the future. Met Park was planned with native and adaptive plantings that are conducive to the Arlington climate—the soil is engineered to retain water and promote root growth while smart and low-flow irrigation systems are optimized to reduce water consumption by providing only what the native plants need. The garden currently includes ten Painted Lady butterflies that are currently in their chrysalises metamorphosing from caterpillar into butterfly—but they’ll be spreading their wings soon.Amazon’s second headquarters was built with sustainability at its core, including two acres (or nearly 100,000 square feet) of green roofs with native plantings where visitors and employees alike can find respite and connect to nature. The Amazon Horticulture team leads a program in partnership with the local Love and Carrots organization, grows fresh produce that gets delivered to the local nonprofit Kitchen of Purpose, with 800 pounds of produce contributing to over 600 meals per week.Thank you to the horticulturists, volunteers, and employees, who have been pivotal in the launch of Met Park’s Butterfly Garden.We’re now extending our commitment to the Amazon Housing Equity Fund with an additional $1.4 billion in funding to create and preserve 14,000 more homes in three of its hometown communities—Washington State's Puget Sound region; the Arlington, Virginia/National Capital region; and Nashville, Tennessee. Success and scale bring broad responsibility and as we continue to grow, we are committed to using our resources to help address important challenges that our hometown communities face.

Join employees, community members, and government officials as they tour the HQ2 offices and amenities that are now open for the neighborhood to enjoy.Here are a few highlights of our community engagement efforts and positive impact over the past year:
We worked with more than 100 nonprofits in and around Arlington, Virginia, which is home to Amazon’s second headquarters (HQ2). Our support went to organizations like Bridges to Independence, which is working to break intergenerational cycles of poverty; the English Empowerment Center, which serves nearly 1,500 beginning-level English language and literacy adult learners; and Aspire, which helps historically underserved young people fulfill their potential through afterschool and summer learning programs that support and connect families, schools, and communities.
Amazon was named the top philanthropic company in the Washington, D.C., metro area by the Washington Business Journal. Since 2018, Amazon has invested more than $161 million in local nonprofits, community groups, organizations, businesses, and public schools.
Amazon launched a new housing pilot initiative that will help nearly 1,000 individuals and families from underserved communities become homeowners in Virginia and Washington, D.C., as well as Washington state and Tennessee. This is part of a broader set of initiatives from the Amazon Housing Equity Fund. Since 2021, Amazon has committed over $1 billion in loans and grants to create or preserve more than 7,500 affordable housing units in and around the National Capital Region.
Amazon continued to advance its commitment to equity in education through several partnerships and funding efforts, including Amazon Future Engineer, a comprehensive childhood-to-career program aimed at increasing access to computer science education for students from underserved and underrepresented communities. Amazon helped students broaden their horizons through education via:
$1.8 million in scholarships awarded to 45 Capital Region students by the Amazon Future Engineer program
241 schools and 23,470 students across the Capital Region received STEM education and career exploration courses
13,000+ students have access to three AWS Think Big Spaces in Virginia
Amazon has continued to support and integrate local businesses into its Arlington headquarters, representing vibrant local favorites, women- and minority-owned retailers, and others. For example, visitors can get their bike serviced at Conte’s Bike Shop, drop off furry friends at doggy daycare at District Dogs, get a workout in at HUSTLE, grab a bite to eat at Peruvian Brothers, and so much more.Amazon will continue to strive to be a good neighbor and trusted business partner across the region.Learn more about what we’re doing for our employees, neighbors, and the community.Read more in our Community Impact Report for the National Capital Region.
