When Amazon sellers have inventory in FBA fulfillment centers that they no longer wish to sell or cannot sell, they can request disposal orders to have those items destroyed. Amazon charges a per-unit disposal fee based on the item's size tier and weight. Understanding these costs is essential for making informed decisions about whether to remove, liquidate, or dispose of slow-moving and unsellable inventory.

• Per-unit fee structure - Disposal fees are charged for each unit Amazon processes through a disposal order, with rates determined by the product's size tier and shipping weight.

• Same rates as removal fees - Disposal fees follow the identical rate schedule as removal order fees, so there is no cost difference between having Amazon ship items back to you versus destroying them.

• Per-unit billing as of February 2026 - Starting February 15, 2026, disposal fees are charged as each individual unit is processed rather than all at once when the entire order completes, giving sellers better visibility into charges.

• Alternative to removal orders - Sellers can also choose removal orders to have inventory shipped back to a designated address instead of destroyed, which may be preferable when items can be resold through other channels.

• Standard-size lightweight items reduced - For 2026, items in the 0 to 0.5 lb standard-size tier received a 19% fee reduction, dropping from $1.04 to $0.84 per unit effective January 15, 2026.

2026 Disposal Fee Rates

Disposal fees for standard-size items are organized into four weight tiers. The lightest tier covers items weighing 0 to 0.5 pounds at $0.84 per unit, which reflects a notable reduction from the previous $1.04 rate. Items in the 0.5 to 1.0 pound range cost $1.53 per unit to dispose of. The next tier covers products weighing 1.0 to 2.0 pounds at $2.27 per unit. For standard-size items exceeding 2 pounds, sellers pay a base fee of $2.89 plus an additional $1.06 for each pound beyond the 2-pound threshold.
