Amazon has introduced updated compliance requirements for sellers listing personal flotation devices (PFDs) on its marketplace, effective September 1, 2025. Sellers offering life jackets, buoyancy aids, and other flotation products must now meet new international safety standards or risk having their listings deactivated. This policy change reflects Amazon's ongoing effort to ensure product safety across its platform and align with the latest regulatory frameworks.

What's Changing

• New safety standards required — Personal flotation devices must now comply with either AS 4758.1:2022 (the Australian standard) or ISO 12402:2020 (the international standard) to remain listed on Amazon.
• Compliance documentation mandatory — Sellers must submit all required compliance documents proving their PFD products meet the updated regulatory and policy requirements.
• September 1 deadline — All documentation must be submitted by September 1, 2025 to avoid product deactivation. Listings without proper documentation after this date may be suppressed or removed.
• Applies to all PFD sellers — The requirement covers any seller listing personal flotation devices, regardless of fulfillment method (FBA or FBM).

Understanding the New Standards

The two standards Amazon now requires represent the most current safety benchmarks for personal flotation devices globally. AS 4758.1:2022 is the Australian standard for PFDs, which classifies devices by performance level and specifies testing requirements for buoyancy, durability, and construction. ISO 12402:2020 is the international equivalent, widely recognized across European and global markets. Both standards were updated in recent years to reflect advances in materials, testing methods, and real-world performance data.

For sellers, this means that older certifications or compliance documents referencing previous editions of these standards may no longer be sufficient. If your PFD products were certified under earlier versions of AS 4758 or ISO 12402, you will need to verify whether your existing documentation meets the updated requirements or whether recertification is necessary. Contacting your manufacturer or testing laboratory to confirm compliance with the 2022 and 2020 editions respectively is a critical first step.
